Why Spiders Move Indoors Every Fall
Every September and October, homeowners across Crown Point and Northwest Indiana notice the same thing. Spiders start showing up inside. In corners, along baseboards, in garages, and sometimes right in the middle of the living room floor. It is not your imagination. As the weather cools down, spiders are looking for warmth, shelter, and food. And your home checks every box.
The good news is you do not have to live with them. Here is what actually works to keep spiders out this fall.
Seal the Entry Points
Spiders do not need much space to get inside. Gaps around windows, cracks in your foundation, spaces under doors, and openings around pipes and utility lines are all invitations. Walk around the outside of your home and look for any gap wider than a pencil tip. Caulk and weatherstripping are cheap and effective. Pay extra attention to your garage door seal and basement windows.
Cut Back the Landscaping
Bushes, shrubs, and mulch beds that touch your home are highways for spiders. Keep vegetation trimmed back at least 12 inches from your foundation. Move firewood piles away from the house. Leaf piles against the foundation are another common hiding spot that spiders love.
Reduce Outdoor Lighting
Lights attract insects, and insects attract spiders. If you have bright porch lights or landscape lighting right next to your home, you are basically running a buffet for spiders. Switch to yellow or sodium vapor bulbs that attract fewer bugs, or move lights away from doorways.
Eliminate Indoor Clutter
Spiders love undisturbed areas. Cardboard boxes in the basement, cluttered closets, and storage rooms that rarely get touched are prime spider real estate. Use plastic bins instead of cardboard and keep storage areas tidy. Regular vacuuming along baseboards and corners makes a big difference too.
Professional Perimeter Treatment
The most effective way to keep spiders out is a professional perimeter treatment around your home. We apply a barrier around the foundation, entry points, eaves, and common spider nesting areas. The products we use are pet friendly and odorless, so your family and animals stay safe.
Do Not Wait Until You See Them Everywhere
By the time you are seeing multiple spiders inside, they have already been setting up camp for weeks. The best time to treat is before they move in.
