How to Keep Your Pool Water Clear All Summer in Indiana
By Your Local Pool Guy

Clear Water Starts With Consistency

The number one reason pools turn green in the middle of summer is inconsistent maintenance. Northwest Indiana heat and humidity create the perfect conditions for algae growth, and once it gets ahead of you, catching up is expensive and frustrating.

Run Your Filter Enough

During peak summer, your filter should run at least 8 to 10 hours per day. Most people underrun their filters to save on electricity, but the cost of clearing a green pool is far more than the electric bill.

Test Your Water Weekly

At minimum, check your chlorine and pH levels once a week. Chlorine should stay between 1 and 3 ppm. pH should be between 7.2 and 7.6. When pH drifts high, your chlorine stops working effectively.

Shock After Heavy Use

After a pool party or a weekend of heavy swimming, shock your pool that evening. Swimmers introduce oils, sunscreen, sweat, and organic matter that eat through your chlorine fast.

Skim and Brush Regularly

Debris that sits on the surface or clings to the walls breaks down and feeds algae. A quick skim and brush twice a week takes 10 minutes and prevents hours of headaches later.

Do Not Ignore the Filter

A dirty filter cannot clean your water no matter how long you run it. Clean cartridge filters every 2 to 4 weeks. Backwash sand filters when the pressure gauge reads 8 to 10 psi above the clean starting pressure.

When to Call a Professional

If your water is cloudy, green, or you just cannot get your chemistry balanced, call Your Local Pool Guy at (219) 712 7188.
